The Legal Practice Manager is responsible for supporting the Principal Solicitor with all operational aspects of Care Consumer Law and ensuring the flow of operations information to the Chief Executive Officer. The Legal Practice Manager ensures that Cares’ objectives are met efficiently and effectively, including meeting Care Consumer Law’s accreditation and compliance requirements as a community legal centre with Community Legal Centres Australia (CLCA), the peak body for state and territory community legal centres in Australia and as required by the ACT Law Society.

About Care Consumer Law

Care Consumer Law is a community legal centre providing legal services to people on low incomes or experiencing disadvantage or vulnerability in Canberra and its region. It is accredited by Community Legal Centres Australia (CLCA) and run as a program of Care.

The Centre specialises in the following areas of law: consumer credit and debt including financial abuse, insurance, consumer protection, fair trading, and bankruptcy. It offers outreach assistance through its Mobile Debt Clinic to people facing barriers to access and also provides a duty lawyer service at the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT).

Since 2020, Care Consumer Law has been operating the Defined Benefits Information Service (DBIS) for the ACT Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) Commission providing information and legal advice to people injured in motor accidents in the ACT about benefits available under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2019.

Position Description

The Legal Practice Manager is directly accountable to the Principal Solicitor. They are responsible for:

  • Leadership and oversight of the administrative, human resources and compliance functions.
  • Internal review and implementation of systems and processes to support Care Consumer Law.
  • Supporting the Principal Solicitor and CEO on strategic and operational priorities.

All positions under Care’s employment contracts are reliant on continued funding.

Selection Criteria

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Well-developed policy, research and analytical skills including experience working in a policy related role.
  • Capacity to put efficient workflows in place to maximise legal service delivery and performance.
  • Proven organisational and management abilities.
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated planning, time management and delegation skills.
  • Excellent administrative skills, particularly with respect to accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong networking and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and deal empathetically and non-judgementally with staff, diverse stakeholders, and complex clients.

The successful candidate is also required to:

  • Have a demonstrated commitment to Care’s values of equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Hold a Working with Vulnerable People Card for the ACT.
  • Have experience working in an organisation with client groups who experience disadvantage and vulnerability.

Summary Terms and Conditions

  • Part time: 3-4 days per week
  • Core office hours 9am – 5pm
  • Base salary commencement level SCHADS Award Level 7
  • 4 weeks annual leave with 17.5% leave loading, paid annually.
  • Christmas shutdown period excluded from annual leave and provided for by Care.
  • Opportunity to purchase additional leave.
  • Above Award personal leave entitlement of 18 days per year.
  • Superannuation paid at Superannuation Guaranteed Rate of 11% to Employee’s choice of fund with opportunity for Employee co-contribution.
  • Salary sacrificing available.
  • Terms and conditions are those set out in the Job Offer Letter, Care Employment Contract, Care policies & procedures, SCHCADS Award and the National Employment Standards as set out in the Fair Work Act (2009).
  • All Care staff are required to comply with Care policies & procedures.
